Sweep the Streets Saturday - This event has already occurred

Event Details:

Help give Port Colborne a healthy summer sparkle during Sweep the Streets SaturdayPre-register online and join your fellow community members in cleaning up litter – such as small plastics, cups, cans, and other waste – on neighbourhood streets throughout the city. Supplies like garbage and recycling bags, gloves, pickers (optional), and high-vis vests will be provided. Taking part is easy:

  • Pre-register and meet at the Engineering and Operations Centre for 9:00 a.m.
  • Sign a consent waiver, gather your supplies, and choose a location that could use some cleaning up
  • Complete the sweep and take all collected litter back to the Centre before 11:00 a.m.
  • Share a photo of you sweeping the streets using the hashtag #PORTicipate and tagging @cityofportcolborne

All participants must review a list of safety tips and sign a consent waiver. Groups with participants that are between the ages of 12 and 17 must be supervised by a minimum of one adult (18 years of age or older).

Safety Tips

·        Wear appropriate clothing (e.g., long pants, long sleeves, boots, hat, and sunscreen), and try to wear light coloured clothing for greater visibility and to spot ticks.

·        Always use non-porous gloves to pick up litter, even when using a picker. Only pick up litter. Leaves, twigs, plants, and animal waste can remain on the ground.

·        Be careful near roads and waterways, and do not go near railways.

·        Clean-up locations are limited to public property only. Avoid trespassing on private property whenever possible.

·        Do not take risk attempting to reach litter in hard-to-reach places.

·        Watch for and avoid hazards, such as wild animals, insects, bulky or heavy items, construction materials, chemical substances, light bulbs or fluorescent tubes, broken glass, metal, and noxious weeds.

·        If you encounter a sharp object, do not touch it! Sharps waste includes needles, syringes or other biomedical waste that can penetrate the skin causing infection or other complications. Report the location of these items to City staff.

·        Bring hand sanitizer and always wash your hands after your clean-up!
